This film is a reconstruction of Robert Baldwin’s involvement in the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837. Though bound to the cause of constitutional reform by principle, Baldwin’s heart was with the rebels and in the midst of armed revolt, he withdrew to fight a lonely battle with himself.

The events revolve around a member of parliament representing one of the electoral districts in Upper Egypt who was able to achieve great successes, but he dies. The people nominate his daughter, a graduate of the Faculty of Law, to replace him, but she encounters many problems.

Flag Purdy, a "man of many principles" must learn the hard lesson of compromisation in order to keep his wife and children. The "final straw" comes when Flag's wife and children bring a Christmas tree into his house.
